Every week after coffee hour a group of parishioners meets to discuss a classical work, from writings of the Fathers, to ancient Greek Literature and how Christians should approach literature. This book club is focused on discussing the great literature of the classical tradition, encompassing both Christian and Pagan literature. Following in the footsteps of our fathers among the saints who believed wisdom ought to be sought for wherever it may be found, we read the so-called "Great Books", those books recognized as being masterpieces of literature and containing great wisdom. This begins with the study of Homer, the great poet who wrote the Iliad and Odyssey, but it moves through the greek playwrights, historians and philosophers, and then reaches the writings of the early Fathers of the Church who not only engaged with Scripture, but also directly engaged with the writings of the pagan philosophers and poets. Through the prayers of Saint Basil the Great, St. Paul the Pharisee, and St. Justin the Philosopher, may we follow the path of Wisdom towards Christ, the True Wisdom of the Father, tread by many great Christian saints before us.
You’re welcome to join in the conversation, even if you’ve not read. See Jack K. for more details, or Fr. Joseph if you don’t know Jack.
